What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation or PE is when a man ejaculates too quickly and has trouble controlling their ejaculation time. While most men can last approximately 12 minutes and are able to control their ejaculation, a man suffering from premature ejaculation will often last less than 2 minutes and will have little or no control.

Why is premature ejaculation a medical condition?

Premature ejaculation is a highly sensitive condition that can lead to secondary symptoms such as distress, embarrassment, anxiety, and depression.

What causes premature ejaculation?

Ejaculation involves emissions controlled by the hypogastric nerves while hormones all have a role to play in the process of controlling your ejaculation time.

Biological causes of premature ejaculation can include:

  • abnormal hormone or neurotransmitter levels
  • inherited traits
  • unusual reflex activity
  • certain thyroid problems
  • depression and anxiety
  • relationship problems

Types of premature ejaculation

There are two types of premature ejaculation;

  • Lifelong premature ejaculation which occurs from the very first sexual encounter.
  • Acquired premature ejaculation which develops later in life often due to emotional or medical episodes.

Treatment for premature ejaculation

There are many customised treatment options. Your treatment method will differ based on the type of premature ejaculation you are suffering, the cause, how serious it is and also your personal preferences.

Process

Is PE treatable?

01

Initial Consultation

You’ll speak to our expert medical practitioners about your history and any other chronic illnesses. This consultation is done discreetly over the phone. We encourage you to be as open as possible so we can determine the seriousness and the cause of your premature ejaculation.

02

Testing & treatment plan

Depending on what our doctor finds during your initial consultation, they may recommend additional testing and psychological screening. Based on the findings we will put together a multi-disciplinary treatment plan which is completely customised to you.

03

Treatment & monitoring

For most of our patients, their first treatment is successful at resolving their symptoms quickly and effectively. However, part of our customisation process is testing what works best for you. It is recommended you commit to 12 months worth of treatment to effectively overcome your condition.

Premature Ejaculation FAQs

WHAT IS PREMATURE EJACULATION (PE)?

Premature ejaculation is when a man cannot control his ejaculation and, generally speaking, can only engage in a few minutes of sexual intercourse. PE is a problem only if it leaves both the sexual partner and the one experiencing premature ejaculation unsatisfied and if it causes undue stress and anxiety as a result. Premature ejaculation may accompany an erection problem such as ED, but PE is generally treated differently.  If you are experiencing both PE and ED a customised treatment can be administered to overcome both symptoms at the same time.

WHAT CAUSES PREMATURE EJACULATION?

Premature ejaculation is most often caused by a combination of factors. The most common biological issues causing premature ejaculation are an overly sensitive penis, hormone levels and weak pelvic muscles. It's also important to remember that ejaculating too quickly occurs from a combination of factors beyond the physical: psychological causes like anxiety, guilt, depression, or stress are all significant sources for this condition, and the most effective treatment plans address all of these factors.

HOW DO I STOP EJACULATING SO QUICKLY?

Depending on the severity of your condition there are many ways you can stop premature ejaculation. These include behavioural methods, psychosexual psychology, clinical treatment which includes oral and topical creams, and working with your sexual health doctor to find what blend of treatment options is right for your individual circumstances.

HOW LONG DO MEN LAST ON AVERAGE?

A healthy ejaculation time is anywhere from 12 - 20 minutes. Studies have shown that the average man lasts approximately 10 - 15 minutes. While erection times vary from a couple of seconds to an hour, premature ejaculation is very common and can be quite distressing to a couple. It is not uncommon for a man to last under a minute. According to the Urology Care Foundation, about 1 in 3 US males aged 18 to 59 years old have problems with premature ejaculation.

ARE THERE ANY NATURAL REMEDIES TO LAST LONGER IN BED?

Although we don't recommend gimmicks, our naturopaths and dieticians always advise men to take part in healthy eating and supplementation so that your nutrient levels reach an optimum range in order to improve their sexual function. Many men have reported benefits from testing their vitamin levels with pathology and restoring any deficiencies such as Vitamin D, Zinc, Magnesium etc.

IS THERE A CURE TO PREMATURE EJACULATION?

PE can be effectively managed and should improve with time. While not all men are permamently cured of premture ejaculation, it is a highly treatable illness. A variety of oral and topical medications can help with premature ejaculation. The patients at Vityl Men's Health also see great result from psychological therapy to address their anxieties and insecurities. In addition to clinical intervention, all men are encouraged to keep up with their pelvic floor exercises and to practice behaviour modification techniques like the squeeze technique and the stop-start method in order to further strengthen your conrol.

HOW CAN I INCREASE MY STAMINA IN BED?

Modern medicine still has not pinpointed the exact reason why some men finish in less than a minute and others last for almost an hour. Despite this, over the years doctors and researchers have uncovered effective treatment plans. In addition to medical treatment behavioural techniques (such as the squeeze technique and pelvic floor exercises), mental health support such as CBT can and should also be attempted to increase your satisfaction.
